Top 8 health and environmental benefits of beeswax candles

Candles are a great addition to any home when we want to create a cosy or romantic atmosphere. Although there are many different candle options available on the market, not all of them are good for you. Beeswax candles are one of the natural options available, that bring multiple benefits with each purchase. Below we discuss the top health and environmental benefits of burning beeswax candles.

1. Beeswax candles are 100% natural

Beekeeping provides numerous wonderful products, including honey, beeswax, propolis and bee pollen. All of them are 100% natural if no chemicals are used for feeding and keeping the bees.

What is great is that beeswax is a product generated by bees’ glands during in the process of their life for creating honeycombs. That is, beeswax is in fact a building material for making walls inside a hive and keeping honey. When the beeswax is extracted, there is no need to add any chemicals to improve its characteristics.

As for beeswax substitutes, such as paraffin or soybeans mass, their production is connected with a large amount of waste. Paraffin is a by-product of oil production, which contains contaminants which can damage your health. These include toluene and benzene, officially recognised as carcinogens. Accordingly, when use paraffin candles regularly, we cannot help but inhale these substances.

As for soybeans, they cannot be environmentally friendly either. About 90-95% of soy plants are grown using GMO and chemical fertilisers and pesticides, which naturally kills the soils. Moreover, all artificial products for making candles are bleached for a white colour.

2. They contain no artificial fragrances

How should a candle smell? Do you think soybeans or an oil-based substance can smell like a strawberry? Of course not. To give them different scents, artificial fragrances are added. This may be pleasing for our noses, but they are far from natural.

As for beeswax candles, they can be aromatised as well. But there is no need to do that. They have their own unique scent of honey and all those flowers used to make the wax. Additionally, to maintain its natural properties, some candles may be fragrances with natural, essential oils. Creating a perfect aroma and keeping its health benefits intact.

3. Beeswax candles are biodegradable

When you burn a beeswax candle, there is almost no soot or other waste. This means that, even if you do not completely burn such a candle, it will degrade into simpler materials that will not harm the environment. Meanwhile, when components of paraffin and soybean candles disintegrate, some of them will not degrade for a long time, which will pollute the environment.

4. Beeswax candles purify and refresh the air at your home

Another interesting feature of beeswax candles, is that they emit negatively charged ions. These ions merge with positively charged ions so that the latter are neutralised. Positively charged ions are associated with bad odour, dust and other contaminants.

Imagine you enter a room with stale air, where it is hard to breathe. When you use a beeswax candle, you purify the air and burn this energy, so the place becomes cleaner.

5. Their light is much brighter and stronger

Beeswax candles produce much stronger and denser light than other types of candles. Beeswax is a natural material that needs a lot of time to be produced, and the connections between its particles are much stronger compared to artificially made candles. This makes the temperature at which beeswax candles start melting much higher than that for other materials. For the same reason, the light produced by these candles is denser.

6. These candles last much longer

You can conduct an experiment and compare which types of candles will burn longer. The most likely result is that a paraffin candles will burn faster than others. A soybean candle may burn almost as long as a beeswax candle, but the champion is definitely beeswax. These candles will burn up to 5 times longer than paraffin candles. So, when you are deciding what candles to buy, keep this mind and the value for money is clear.

7. They can be used by highly allergic individuals

For those who suffer from allergies or have health issues such as asthma or lung diseases, beeswax candles are a great option. Many synthetic and man-made candles contain a variety of chemicals and un-natural products which are emitted into the air when burning. Beeswax candles on the other hand, are hypoallergic. This is down to the natural material they are made of, which burns clean and prevents allergic reactions during use.

8. Beeswax candles are natural in colour

They naturally have a noble and rich yellow-amber colour, which can hold different shades depending on the type of pollen collected by the bees. Other candles can be artificially coloured in any colour, but it would be hard to replicate the genuine colour of beeswax. The various natural benefits of beeswax candles make them an excellent choice for anyone who is health and environmentally conscious!
