All too often we’re so focused on the interior of our home, that we forget how important the exterior is too. After all, when you think of your home as a gift, why wouldn’t you want to focus on its exterior? It’s going to look that much more valuable if its “wrapping paper” is tidy and maintained.
Yet, a great looking yard is so much more than just a way to impress your neighbors. It provides a relaxing outdoor space that you can be proud of for you and your family to enjoy. However, we also understand that not necessarily everyone is born with a green thumb and eye for landscaping. To help you, here are some tips for a great looking yard.
Identify the Problem Areas
Before you dive in, you have to identify what it is that you want to do. Where are the problem areas, and what issue is on the highest level of priority? Do you have a pest problem? Perhaps your gutters are clogged. Is there a certain tree that’s leaving a considerable amount of debris all over your yard?
Maybe you need to cut back on some weeds? Plan what it is that you hope to do, and this will help you achieve the overall look and feel you envision. Without a plan, there’s something to be wandering around in the dark and lacking focus.
Focus on Healthy Grass
A healthy lawn is the key to a great looking yard. You want to keep your grass looking healthy and bright by mowing it regularly and monitoring it regularly for little critters or fallen debris from trees and plants. Remember, not all grass is created equally, so you want to make sure that you cut your grass the appropriate height for the type of grass it is.
Water it regularly, and use fertilizer as needed. Not only will this look fantastic, it’s much more enjoyable sitting on grass that’s soft and vibrant than it is on crunchy, pokey, and brown. Ouch!
Consider Furniture
Consider adding a few furniture pieces that are appropriate for your yard and can withstand the forces of nature. From a table to a hammock, to a nice couch where you can sit and enjoy an evening tea, outdoor furniture can make your yard even more enjoyable since it gives you a place to relax and chat with guests.

Add Foliage
While “cleaning up” your yard and adding grass is definitely a fantastic start, it’s not quite enough to create a full fledged outdoor oasis. You also want to make sure that you have plenty of foliage— from flowers to green cheese. This will give your backyard and extra green touch, and add to the overall aesthetic. Just remember that any flowers and plants you add will need to be cared for. If you’re not up for the task of looking after your plans, then you might want to opt for low maintenance varieties. Usually people are more than happy to guide you on the right plants at the greenery. Simply specify your schedule and how much work you can realistically devote to upkeep your garden.
