Getting Your Living Space Ready for Winter

With the colder days and longer nights upon us, the time to come to start getting our homes ready for winter. During the fall months, we’ll be spending less time outdoors and more time in the sanctuary of our own homes, so naturally we’ll want to hunker down and make our living spaces as comfortable as possible.

Depending on the climate where you live, there are also steps to take to make sure your home stays safe in more extreme temperatures. So, whether you’ve just moved into your dream property or you’ve been settled for years, here are some things you can do now to get your home ready for winter.

Check for Drafts

It might only be a slight draft now, but come winter it could be sucking some serious warmth out of your home and depleting your energy supply. Run your hands along the seals of your windows and doors to check for a breeze, and replace seals and repair caulking where necessary. You could also buy insulted drapery if you live in a colder climate.

Inspect Your Roof

Depending on where you live, winter can bring along some unpredictable weather and you can end up with a hail damage roof quickly. Rain, hail and snow can compromise your roof structure, and you don’t want to be in the thick of it before you realize there’s a problem. When you’re inspecting your roof, look for loose or missing shingles and clear the roof of any debris. If you can’t get up to your roof to inspect it, or you’re not confident you could identify a problem, ask your local roofing company to do it for you.

Get the Temperature Right

When you’re spending time at home, it’s important to be comfortable – especially at night when you’re trying to sleep. Of course, the outside temperature will vary at this time of year depending on where you live. Some areas are still hot and dry, in which case you will probably want to consider keeping your AC going a little while longer. Soon it will be colder, however, so it’s sensible to have a space heating system in place for when the weather changes.

If the temperature in your home has started to drop, you’ll need to heat it during the evenings and first thing in the morning, so it stays warm throughout the day. Heat pumps are an excellent way to heat your living space, as you can just turn them on when you need them and they don’t use too much energy. Protect Your Greenery

If you keep pots in plants, now’s the time to bring them inside. Similarly, if you have a vegetable patch outside, you may want to cover it to protect your vegetables from frost. Any herbs can be frozen and used directly from the freezer, or else you could dry them out and keep them in jars. You will also want to plant any bulbs for next spring and rake and remove leaves from your yard. Applying lawn fertilizer will also help prevent damage to the grass in the winter months, and it will kill any lingering weeds.

Be Prepared

If your climate is prone to extreme winter weather, it’s a good idea to stock up your garage with extra fuel, snow-shoveling equipment and food and water, just in case. Moreover, you should flush your water heater to clean the deposited minerals and other particles. Flushing will allow your water heater to work properly and efficiently. In winter, the drainage pipes also get clogged due to grease, so it is better to have an inspection of your drainage pipe or do the cleaning before the winter starts.
