The 5 principles of a minimalist decoration

“Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent”, said designer Joe Sparano. The minimalist design movement is becoming each day more popular. This trend is easy to copy from home magazines or websites and it is additionally cheap, if combined with imagination and good taste. However, to achieve organic, minimalist designing without messing with the trends, going back to some principles is mandatory.

Functionality in minimalism

Doing more with less is the goal. Nevertheless, don’t forget to give each piece a purpose to be displayed in a certain place. A collage of the abstract is not synonym of minimalism if just granted with no purpose. Minimalism started to become famous in the 1920’s and it is still an innovative style. The forward-thinking design, known also as the minimalist design, breaks a room into the necessities. Every single item must be functional. Pare down to the basics and build on them only when it is necessary.

Minimalist decorating with form

When decorating a room, think of the basic shapes such as squares and rectangles. After this it is important to also consider the most common lines used in the design: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved or zig zag. Getting the core of the art, and the simplification of it, goes through considering these forms.

The flow of minimalist art

In this kind of home décor, you want to achieve harmony. Balance the walls with wildcard wallpapers and opt for furniture that blend into the background of a room. Decoration must be fluid and not boring. Get innovative with minimalist design and make sure one feature doesn’t stand out against the rest of the surroundings.

Using color in the minimalist decoration

White, beige and grey are popular colors in the minimalist decoration. Primary colors like yellow and blue are also fine as long as they are cast in their pure shades. Some deviants of these tones make a house look more contemporary than minimalist, which means it would be reflecting a design movement that came after minimalism. The kitchen of a house is a special place to incorporate brighter colors. In the minimalist spaces, the dining table and kitchen usually share the same area, so don’t mix the location where you want to eat and talk looking too sterile.

The floor can also be minimalist

A minimalist house shouldn’t be cold and should instead be cozy, striving to reflect modern tone. Two of the most popular choices among the minimalist design are concrete and wood. Throwing a neutral rug on the floor is a well-known method within the minimalist practice to add some warmth to the room. Mies van der Rohe, minimalist architect, favored construction materials like industrial steel and glass because of their simple nature. These can also be options to adopt in your own design ideas. Don’t hold your horses and be inventive.

Minimalist decorating: from the theory to the practice

Before decorating a house, pare down your space and simplify the area before thinking about minimalist decorations. You don’t want to end up looking more like a retro house owner, than a minimalist one. So, if you follow this first step you will avoid going in the wrong direction. Any person has the ability of decorating a house with a minimalist style, you don’t need to be an architect or designer to do it. Don’t feel overwhelmed by it and do the best you can.

The primary rule of the space itself is always a must think. More important than the detailed furniture, clean objects and decoration is the space in the room. Clutter is an enemy here and if you need to cut down walls to get a more minimalist design, do it. Always remember, less is more.
