How To Choose The Right Size Carport For Your Home

A carport is a useful addition to any home, even if you have a garage. The carport is much easier to use than a garage, you can simply drive into it. You’ll also find it’s much easier to get planning permission for a carport, a building license will suffice.

Carports are easy to erect and provide great protection from the elements, making it easier for you to get in and out of your home. They can also be free-standing or attached to your home.

But how do you decide between a single or a double carport? Of course, these are not the only options, a carport can be any size you want. Here’s the best way to make the right decision:

It’s Usage

You’re probably building a carport so that you have somewhere to keep your car. However it can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a covered seating area or a place to store your camping vehicle.

It can even be a combination of all of these things.

The more you plan to do under it the larger it will need to be.  Any carport should have at least two meters of clearance but you may need more if you’re planning on parking a tall vehicle in it.

Knowing what you are using the carport for will help you to decide the size of your carport.

However, you should note that a double carport should be considered the minimum size. Even if you are just parking a car under it, you’ll want space to get out and stay dry.

Style

You may think of a carport as a series of wooden or metal posts attached to each other with a solid roof. This is the essence of a basic carport but not the only option. Some carports adopt this style but are made of plastic or another material, others are more like outside sheds, giving protection against all the elements and allowing you to work on your vehicle at any time of the year.

As well as choosing the material you’ll need to think about the shape. Square edging is common but you can have curved o can even make an irregular shaped carport.

Of course, you should be aware that any carport out of the ordinary shape will be more expensive and may have to be custom-built. But, if it suits your needs and your style, it’s worth it.

Budget

You should spend a few moments considering the budget you have available. This will help to dictate the style you can choose and even the size. While borrowing is always an option it’s best to avoid this route and pay for what you can afford.

You’ll find there are plenty of different carports to suit any budget.

Reputation

Finally, take a few moments to consider the manufacturer. They should have a known and respected reputation in their field. This will give you the confidence that you’re purchasing a premium product that will last for years.

If you’re not familiar with the supplier, then check with family, friends, and on social media. You’ll be able to get honest feedback which will help you to make the right decision.

With a little planning, you can choose the perfect carport for your needs.
