4 Ways to Deal with Bugs This Summer

Bugs: While most people hate them, some are truly fascinated by these hexapod invertebrates. However, one thing that most of us can agree on is that these creepy crawlies have no place in your home.

Not only can insect pests create an unsanitary and unhygienic environment, but they’re also irritating. Insects such as bees, wasps and some spiders have painful bites or stings, and certain bugs, such as termites, can cause terrible damage to a property. Even common, seemingly harmless bugs such as cockroaches can be a main cause of allergies and other health issues. Therefore, it makes sense to keep bugs as far away from your home as possible, but with summer quickly approaching, this can be much easier said than done. So, we’ve put together some top tips to help you bug-proof your home.

Tip #1. Seal Entrances:

Locked doors and windows aren’t just for keeping unwanted humans from entering your home, but they can also be an effective way to keep bugs from swarming your premises. However, since bugs are small and can easily fit into tiny cracks and gaps, it’s important to properly seal every opening to your house to prevent them from wriggling into your property. This is a simple solution, and one which can be done yourself.

Tip #2. Avoid Plants:

Bugs tend to be attracted to plants, and while kitchen flowers and filled vases can be a lovely aesthetic to most houses, they can also be a major cause of unwanted creepy crawlies in your home. Instead, artificial flowers and plants could be a life-changing alternative. This way, you won’t lose the visual appeal but won’t need to deal with flies and other pests either.

Tip #3. Use Window Screens:

Most of us rely on natural ventilation during summer, especially if you are hoping to save on your energy bills and cannot live without the breeze of fresh air. However, open windows give bugs an easy entrance into your home, and we all know the irritating sound of a fly hitting the window, trying to fly back out. Sometimes, though, bugs fail to leave your property, and in these cases, it is best to call your local pest control service. To prevent this from happening, you can use bug nets and window screens, which will allow the air to flow through but prevent any bugs from getting in.

Tip #4. Maintain Your Yard:

If your backyard or garden is looking a little overrun, this could have a huge effect on the number of bugs making their way into your home. Bugs such as mosquitos can be painful, and even though they’re small, their bites are itchy and can become easily infected. Since they require a water supply to breed, getting rid of any pooled water in your yard can reduce the number of mosquitos buzzing around your home.

As summer approaches, many of us are gearing up to deal with unwanted flying guests coming in through windows and doors. How do you deal with bugs in the summer? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
