How to Choose The Right AC Unit For Your Home

AC can be a big investment for your home, it’s what helps you stay cool all summer long and warm in the winter. But with all of the different types and models of AC units available on the market, how do you know which one is right for your home?

You want to be sure you’re getting the most out of your purchase. Here are a few factors to consider when choosing an AC unit for your home.

The Size of Your Home

The size of your home is going to be the biggest factor in choosing an AC unit. The larger your home, the more powerful the AC unit will need to be. If you have a smaller home, you can get away with a less powerful and thus, less expensive, AC unit.

For example, a home that is 1,000 square feet will need a different AC unit than a home that is 2,000 square feet. The rule of thumb is that you should have one ton of cooling power for every 600-700 square feet. So, a 1,000 square foot home would need a 1.5 ton AC unit while a 2,000 square foot home would need a 3 ton AC unit.

Your Region’s Climate

The climate where you live is going to be another important factor in choosing an AC unit. If you live in an area with a hot climate, you’re going to want an AC unit that can handle the heat. Conversely, if you live in an area with a milder climate, you won’t need as powerful of an AC unit.

Average temperatures in a hot climate would be in the upper 80s to low 90s. In a mild climate, average temperatures would be in the mid 60s to upper 70s.

Your Budget

Your budget is going to be another big factor in choosing an AC unit. There are a wide range of prices for AC units, so it’s important to set a budget before you start shopping. That way, you can narrow your options down to units that fit within your price range.

These prices can range anywhere from $500 to $5,000 or more.

The Energy Efficiency of the Unit

When you’re looking at AC units, you want to be sure to check the energy efficiency rating. The higher the rating, the lower your energy bills will be. The rating is called the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). You want to look for an AC unit with a SEER rating of at least 14. That is the minimum rating that is required by law. But, the higher the better. Some units have ratings as high as 21.

So, it’s important to choose an AC unit that is as energy efficient as possible.

Choose the Right AC Unit for You

These are just a few factors to consider when choosing an AC unit for your home. Be sure to take all of these factors into account to ensure you’re choosing the right unit for your needs.
