The Spring Allergy: How To Make Your Home Safer

Spring is many people’s favorite season, as nature starts to wake up. But, people that suffer from spring allergies won’t agree with this. The symptoms usually start in early March, when the plants start to bloom and release the pollen particles into the air. The typical allergy symptoms can include sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and runny nose. And it is very important that you prevent the pollen from entering your home.

While you can’t eliminate the cause totally, you can always undertake some preventive measures to make the home safer. They will help you prevent the pollen from coming inside and relieve the most common spring allergy symptoms. Check these simple and easy methods and start implementing them now!

Change the air filter

The purpose of an air filter is to catch all the particles from the air. Whether it is dust, bacteria, or pollen, it will trap and prevent them from circulating in the air. This means that after a while, the air filters will have a buildup of debris. And this means that it is time to change it with a new one. Keep in mind that dirty filters can obstruct the work of the system too.

Make sure that you check the filters once a month. Replace them four times a year to make sure that they are perfectly clean. 14x18x1 Filter Size is the standard size that will trap any particles. Look for MERV 8 rating, as it can trap the tiniest microscopic particles of pollen.

Don’t forget to check the outdoor unit of the AC. The debris that gathers there will go straight to your home unless you remove it.

Clean bedding

The bedding can easily catch up some of the pollen particles. And you really don’t want to disturb a good night’s sleep with coughing and sneezing. Optimally, wash the bedding once a week. Also, avoid outdoor line drying. This is the most common mistake that people do. The bedding will catch all those pollen particles in the air and bring them directly into the bedroom. Stick to your dryer during the peek of the pollen season.

Vacuum cleaning

Upholstered furniture can trap the tiny pollen particles. When doing regular vacuum cleaning, don’t forget the furniture too. Use the special attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean any fabrics in your home. If the person that is doing the cleaning is allergic by themselves, they should wear a mask while doing it. You should do vacuum cleaning in all high-traffic areas once a day.

Keep your pets clean

Pets that go outdoors will bring the pollen in your home. Bathe your pets often to avoid this. Also, make sure that you clean their feet with wet cloth when returning home. This will prevent pollen particles from entering your home.

Don’t open the windows

When the weather gets nice, it is hard not to open the windows and enjoy the fresh air. But, keep in mind that a ton of pollen will come in your home as well. Keep the windows shut during the peek of the bloom season and rely on the AC system.  When the system is clean, you don’t have to worry about anything.

Watch out for mold

While many worry about the outdoor pollutants, they forget about the indoor ones. Mold spores are known to cause allergy as well and can be present anywhere. Mold is present in the humid, dark, and unventilated areas of your home. Check your basement, kitchen, and bathroom to see if there are any signs of mold.
