Flies are annoying when they buzz past your face. But they propose a much more serious threat if you let them have free reign of your home. Flies carry a huge array of diseases, some of which can make you feel sick, while others are more deadly; some diseases can actually kill you.
That’s why you need to know the best ways to get rid of flies indoors.
Electronic Fly Swat
The electronic fly swat attracts insects towards it and then gives them an electric shock, killing them instantly when they touch the device.
You can pick up a good electronic pest control device and mount it on your wall; it will need to be plugged in. That’s it, it will happily start getting rid of flies for you.
Fly Paper
Flypaperis a more traditional option but still a viable option; especially alongside the electronic pest control. Flypaperemits a scent that attracts the flies, they then get stuck to the paper and are unable to move, dying shortly afterward.
The Soda Bottle
Another traditional method and something that you can easily make yourself is the soda bottle trap.
You’ll need an empty 2-literbottle; cut the top third of the bottle off and then invert the cone; don’t forget to remove the lid first.
You’ll now need to pour honey, sugar water, or something else sweet into the bottom part of the bottle. Slide the cut top end in, with the top part of this facing the bottom of the main bottle. The flies will be attracted by the sweet smell and enter the bottle. However, thanks to the shape of the bottle top the flies will not be able to get back out.
Vinegar & Dish Soap
An alternative to the soda bottle trap is the vinegar and dish soap. Simply put a little apple cider vinegar in the bottom if a shallow bowl and then add a spoon of sugar. You can then add a little fruit scented soap; this will make sure the flies are attracted to the bowl.
The flies will land in the mixture and be unable to take off; they will die.
Eucalyptus
Flies hate eucalyptus oil. Soak a few pieces of material in the oil and then hang them in front of your windows and doors. This will stop the flies in their tracks and prevent them from entering your home.
Mint is another choice if you want oil strips near your doors; alternatively, you can add mint plants to your home to discourage the flies from visiting.
You should inspect your home towards the end of each winter. You’ll be looking for small gaps and other crevices where flies can hide. This will allow them to stay dormant during the winter months and then re-emerge to taunt you in the summer.
If you find any places where they may be hiding, be sure to clean them out or fill them with a suitable sealant.
Don’t forget, homemade traps are great but if you’re struggling to get rid of them cal the professionals; they’ll know what to do!
