Minimalist Design Ideas for a Winter Ski Lodge

Whether you own Winter Park real estate at Lakota or a ski lodge in Aspen, Colorado, it is important that you create the right design theme. The ski season is a great time to entertain friends and corporate clients, so what better way to impress than to extend an invitation so your guests can enjoy some skiing and off-piste entertainment in your winter ski lodge.

We have some great ideas for you if you want to renovate your ski lodge this year. The good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to create a minimalist design theme.

Remove Clutter

Clutter is the enemy of minimalism. You can’t allow clutter to take over your ski lodge, as acres of discarded ski equipment and trinkets will ruin your minimalist theme completely. The first thing to do is get ruthless and throw away or otherwise remove any items you don’t need. This includes the antlers hanging on the wall and all those trophies you won when you were 21.

Place cherished possessions into storage or keep them in the main family home. Assess what you have left for value and artistic appeal. One or two attractive pieces that enhance the design theme can be retained, but everything else must go. Once you have completed this exercise, you should be left with furniture and a handful of ornaments and pieces of artwork.

Look at your furniture with a critical eye. Furniture needs to be comfortable, but it also needs to fit the minimalist theme. You need clean lines and items devoid of unnecessary detailing. Antique furniture is OK, but only if it is used sparingly and fits the space. If not, it really must go. Adopt comfortable sofas in pale shades and introduce color in the form of a few tasteful cushions or a throw. Instead of drapes over windows, invest in minimalist, energy-efficient blinds.

Create Innovative Storage Spaces

You need excellent storage to ensure your ski equipment is kept out of sight when not in use. A boot room is very important, as this provides a place to store skis and outerwear. However, if your ski lodge doesn’t have a boot room, build some storage cupboards in an accessible location, preferably close to the outer door.

Luxurious Soft Furnishings

Luxury is good, but not at the expense of your minimalist theme. Stick to a simple color palette and use pale shades of cream, ivory, gray and taupe. Rugs and throws are essential for a ski lodge, but less is more.

Warm and Cozy

Ideally, you will have a large fireplace to provide heat, but if not, install a log burner. Use large church candles in simple stands to add a sense of warmth to the room. Discrete lighting is a must-have, with one or two carefully chosen lights to illuminate dark corners.

Select a few pieces of artwork to add personality to the décor. Large, modern canvases or sculptures are perfect for a minimalist theme.
