The United We Stand project by Philadelphia-based product designer, Ed Mitchell, was conceived after he examined the US State flags and found them to be discordant with each other, with practically no thread of unification in design.
By using the 5 tenets of Good Flag Design, Mitchell set out to redesign and align the State flags with each other, creating a coherent aesthetic through-line. By removing dividing icons, such as Civil War symbols, and numbers clarifying each State’s induction into the US, Mitchell tried to erase anything that would create rivalry between states.
For each State, he examined the identity and pulled its unique geography, historical and famous events, and state motto as well as symbols.
